Before Troy Gentry passed away in a helicopter accident in early September, Montgomery Gentry was putting the finishing touches on their next album.

The duo was set to release their new single, “Better Me,” in preparation for the new project, when the tragedy happened. As friends and family are coping with their loss, the label released the new single sooner than anticipated. The song, that has Gentry on lead vocals, depicts what the 50-year-old was was going through in his own life—working on making himself a better person.

I’m getting older / finding myself and God gettin’ a little bit closer …and sober / I’m a little less reckless / a little less wild card, breaking hearts, kinda senseless / yeah, I’m coming round.

I might cuss and fight / tell a few lies / break a few rules, makin’ promises I can’t keep / but I’ve turned the page on wilder days / I’m writing all this down, hopin’ you’ll see / I ain’t saying I’m perfect, but I’m workin, …on a better me.

I say I’m sorry / sometimes it’s the hardest part to tell somebody – but baby I’m sorr y/ yeah iI’e been prayin’ / but coming from me that might sound a little crazy / but I swear I’m changing.

I might cuss and fight / tell a few lies / break a few rules, makin’ promises I can’t keep / but I’ve turned the page on wilder days / I’m writing all this down, hoping you’ll see / I ain’t saying I’m perfect, but I’m workin’ …on a better me.

Yeah, didn’t want to call you up / didn’t want to just stop by / iIwanted to take my time and make sure I got every word right / I still cuss and fight / tell a few lies / break a few rules, makin’ promises I can’t keep / but I’ve turned the page on wilder days / I’m writing all this down, hoping you’ll see / I ain’t saying I’m perfect, but I’m workin’ …on a better me.

I ain’t sayin’ I’m perfect, but I’m workin’ …on a better me
