Australia’s Biggest Stars Sang “I Still Call Australia Home” To Oprah Who Is Definitely Not From Australia

-

Australia seems like a wacky place. They were a convict colony who became a real country who, according to a few linguists, developed their accent from being drunk all the time. Of course, it is beautiful and full of amazing people and absolutely worth a visit. It’s no surprise Oprah went for an extended stay for her show back in 2013. Why shouldn’t she? But before she left, Hugh Jackman, Olivia Newton John, Keith Urban, Nicole Kidman, and Russell Crowe serenades Oprah in front of a live audience in what is one of the most confusing and wonderful videos on the internet.

The group sang “I Still Call Australia Home,” a song I have never heard and would not expect anyone to know unless they were from Australia. I thought Oprah wrote it to be sung to her as she left. I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT WAS HAPPENING!

As they sing the song, a montage of Oprah’s trip rolls across the screen at the back of the stage. Slowly, Australia’s biggest celebrities file in from behind the children’s choir, ecstatic to see each other.

That’s when the questions started to roll through the back of my mind.

  • Are they thanking her for coming to Australia on behalf of the entire nation?
  • Are they trying to convince her to stay? They must really love Oprah in Australia.
  • Why are there so many people there for just one song?
  • Can all of these people sing? Lookin’ at you Russell Crowe.

It’s like they lost the bid to host the Olympics but had already prepared the song for the closing ceremonies. Might as well sing it to Oprah.

But Oprah might have written this, or at least directed it. She sang along like a proud mother.

The whole song is as baffling as it is fascinating. Once you hit play, you just have to finish it.
