We’ve seen individual movies that focused on the life of Patsy Cline (Sweet Dreams) and Loretta Lynn (Coal Miner’s Daughter), but we have yet to see a film that explored the relationship between the two dear friends until now.
Lifetime has announced the production of Patsy & Loretta—a biopic about the two country legends, their friendship, and their bond over troubled relationships, being touring musicians with families at home, and being successful women in a male-dominated industry. Patsy’s untimely death in a plane crash in 1963 left an indelible mark on Loretta who continued her career and, eventually, named one of her daughters after her mentor and friend.
Megan Hilty (Smash, The Good Wife) takes on the role of Patsy, while Broadway’s Jessie Mueller (Waitress, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical) plays Loretta Lynn in the movie that is directed by Callie Khourie (Thelma & Louise, Nashville). Kyle Schmid plays Patsy’s husband, Charlie Dick and Joe Tippett portrays Doolittle Lynn.
Coal Miner’s Daughter, which starred Sissy Spacek as Loretta and Tommy Lee Jones as Doolittle, did delve into Patsy and Loretta’s relationship and offered a glimpse into the deep connection they shared, however, Patsy & Loretta takes an even deeper dive into how the legends separate lives were somewhat parallel to each other.
Patsy & Loretta, which is being co-produced by Patsy’s daughter, Julie Fudge, and Loretta’s daughter, Patsy Lynn Russell, will be filmed in Nashville this summer and is set to release later this year.
