It’s a famous line in the song, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” and we sing it every year around this time. The line goes, “Oh, Bring us a figgy pudding, oh, bring us a figgy pudding, Oh, bring us a figgy pudding and a cup of good cheer.”
But what exactly is figgy pudding? Well, when the CMA posed the question to the artists participating in the “CMA Country Christmas” special, including Reba McEntire, Martina McBride, Brett Eldredge and more, they seemed to be a little stumped.

“No idea what figgy pudding is,” Reba said flat out.
“I have not idea,” added Martina.
Amy Grant thought it was a trick question. “You think it was made with figs, but somehow I think it has meat in it,” she answered.
I have to admit, I had to look up what figgy pudding was, since I also thought it was pudding made of figs. Well, I wasn’t too far off. According to the dictionary definition, figgy pudding is a rich boiled pudding made with flour, suet, figs, and other dried fruit, traditionally eaten at Christmas.
And now you know.
Tune in to watch Reba host CMA Country Christmas, airing Monday night, December 10 on ABC.
