It’s been 15 years since Shania Twain released her last album—Up! in 2002—but Twain is back with her fifth studio album, Now, due out Sept 29.

With her first single, “Life’s About to Get Good,” in the hands of her fans, the “That Don’t Impress Me Much” singer sat down with “CBS Sunday Morning” to talk about her divorce from producer Mutt Lange, health issues that almost brought her career to an end and finding love again.

On Divorce:

“Getting a divorce with the person that you work with for 15 years of your life is getting a divorce from every element of your life, Twain said. “I was now for the first time in many years standing on my own as a creative, artistic recording artist. There was self doubt for sure, but I was going to overcome that. That was my determination.”

On Childhood:

‘I remember so often the police coming in and banging in the door and the radio was going and guns and you’re just a child—it’s just like a war zone,” Twain said of the abuse her mother endured at the hands of her stepfather. “You’re afraid to tell anybody because you think that you’re going to get taken away.”

On Health Issues:

“I couldn’t get any volume [with my voice] and when I did it was just this really witchy sort of crying sound, it was awful,” she said of her condition dysphonia—a side effect, she thinks, of lime disease. “I went through a phase of letting go and grieving over that loss—that I would never be a singer again. It was really, really, really a terrible thing.”

On Finding Love:

“There was a moment —it was the first time that we kissed. I just never felt like that ever before in my life,” Twain said about her now husband, Frederic Thiebaud. “I thought to myself, ‘How could I not seen you this way before.’ And I said that to him. He said, ‘Because you weren’t looking.”
