As Dolly Parton always says, “the higher the hair, the closer to God.” Team Kelly’s Cheval Shepherd got close to God Monday night (Dec. 3) with her hair piled high atop her head, playing the part for a classic performance of Loretta Lynn’s “You’re Looking at Country,” during “The Voice” Live Top 10.
Imagine that, a 16-year-old singing Loretta Lynn on “The Voice.” We never thought we’d see the day. But Chevel came through with the classic performance, complete with yodeling.
All four judges were equally impressed with the 16-year-old from Farmington, New Mexico. Not only did they all agree she was adorable, but the yodeling seemed to have won them over.
“She is so cute, there’s no way around it,” Blake said. “Chevel, you have found a way to make a Loretta Lynn song even countrier than it was originally. How is that possible? With the yodel that’s reoccurring throughout the performance, I thought it was a lot of fun. I thought you sang it great, so congratulations, sis.”
Chevel has been working her way to the top of the pack by nailing some of country music’s greatest hits such as, The Band Perry’s “If I Die Young,” The Dixie Chicks “Travelin’ Soldier,” The Judds’ “Grandpa (Tell Me ‘Bout The Good Old Days), Little Big Town’s “Little White Church” and Kacey Musgraves’ “Space Cowboy.”
Coach Kelly also had some praise for her little team member.
“You’re super talented, but we also want to put you in our pocket and take you home. I remember when I was a kid and heard Leann Rimes sing ‘Blue’ and it was that old-school country that sounded Patsy, Loretta Lynn, all of that,” Kelly said. “It’s like my favorite. I can’t even believe I was blessed enough that you picked me to be on my team. I love you. I love everything you represent. I cannot wait to hear your record. I don’t even care if you win. You’re gonna make a record.”
That’s great news coming from her coach. Check out Chevel’s performance and tune into the voice to see who will advance to the Top 8, when it airs Monday and Tuesday nights on NBC.
