Jimmy Carter Giving Trisha Yearwood an Award on Behalf of Her Home State of Georgia Made Me Cry (You Will Too)

During President Barack Obama’s second Inauguration I vividly remember watching President Jimmy Carter help his wife Rosalynn down the steps at the United States Capitol before leaving it up her Marine escort to take over before he started shaking hands. It was one of those moments you watch and think– even a former President helps his wife down the stairs?! This guy was the most powerful man in the world once and he’s not afraid to hold his wife’s purse.

Each time I’ve seen President Carter since then, I’ve thought the same thing– he left office and has spent the last few decades of his life building houses for the least of us through Habitat for Humanity. He’s 92 and still puts on a hard hat at job sites regularly. President Carter is one of the good ones.

I usually feel the same way when I’m around Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood— they’re just givers.

During Garth and Trisha’s recent show in Atlanta, President Carter surprised Trisha with a special award from their home state of Georgia. It was one of the sweeter moments to ever happen on stage.

As Carter took the stage he said, “I think you all know where Trisha is from…the great state of Georgia! We’re very proud of her and everything she does. She’s a great singer, a great cook and she and Garth are wonderful helpers of other people. Trisha has honored Georgia for many years and it’s time for Georgia to honor her…Trisha, we love you. Thank you for serving Georgia.”

Clearly emotional, Trisha responded with, “It’s such an honor to receive recognition from my home state of Georgia, and to have President Jimmy Carter, a man who has inspired me, present my proclamation, is truly special. The work Habitat for Humanity does is so important and I’m humbled to be part of their organization. I hope to continue working on site builds for a very long time.”

Trisha also led the crowd in the singing of “Georgia On My Mind.”
