Dan + Shay’s Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney visited the “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” on Thursday (March 1) to share their new single “Tequila.”
Standing in front of a three screens that display images pertaining to the lyrics, Shay commanded attention because of his soul-baring vocals.
Co-penned by Dan, Jordan Reynolds and Nicolle Galyon, the lead track is not your typical drinking song. It tells the story of someone who recalls memories of a past love the moment they taste the hard liquor. Shay’s vocals sound stellar on the heartbreak single.
“But when I taste tequila, baby I still see ya / Cutting up the floor in a sorority t-shirt / The same one you wore when we were / Sky high in Colorado / your lips pressed against the bottle / Swearing on a bible, baby, I’d never leave ya / I remember how bad I need ya / when I taste Tequila / When I taste Tequila,” they sing in the chorus.
Additionally, the new single is the fastest-gaining tune of the duo’s career.
“When we wrote the song Jordan Reynolds was like, ‘What if we wrote a song called ‘Tequila?’ Originally, I think he thought it would be a fun party song. But I was like, ‘What if we spin it and make it a heartbreak relationship thing? Kind of what we do best,'” Dan said to One Country.
Dan + Shay are currently in the studio working on their third studio album, due out later this year. Next up, the duo will hit the road with Rascal Flatts as part of their Back To Us Tour.
