Willie Nelson doesn’t think he was a good father to his boys. He was gone traveling the world for much of their young lives. “They had their mother there, and I wasn’t there. So there were those situations, but that’s just the way it is.” But his wife and sons have a very different perspective. They see Willie as a loving father who gave his sons the best education anyone could ask for. Now, the family has an unbreakable bond, has cut an album together called “Willie Nelson and the Boys”, and is on the road again playing both new and classic country songs.

Sure, Micah and Lukas got in trouble for sharing the dirty jokes their father taught them, but he also shared some invaluable life lessons like:

“Keep your legs crossed and your nose clean.”

“Stay out of trees.” (this one seems important to them; there must be a story behind it)

And then there’s Willie’s three rules:

  1. Don’t be an asshole
  2. Don’t be an asshole
  3. Don’t be a goddamn asshole
“If you broke [number] 3, you screwed up,” says Annie, Nelson’s wife.
“Yeah,” he responded with a smile and a chuckle. “And we all have.”
