Willie Nelson is honoring his longtime friend Kris Kristofferson.

The singer-songwriter performed the hitmaker’s “Me and Bobby McGee” during the “Austin City Limits Hall of Fame New Year’s Eve Special” with Kris on stage with him. Even if you’re friends with the guy, performing one of the greatest songs ever written in front of the guy who penned it has to be tough, but Willie not only crushes this performance, he makes it his own. He half sings, half speaks the song that was also recorded by Janis Joplin.

The New Year’s Eve special also honors this year’s other ACL Hall of Fame inductees Bonnie Raitt and B.B. King.

It’s hosted by actors (and husband and wife) Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally and includes performances by Mavis Staples, Gary Clark Jr., Rodney Crowell and ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons . The special airs Dec. 31 at 9:00 p.m. ET on PBS.
