Elvis may have been the King of Rock and Roll and Michael Jackson the King of Pop, but Willie Nelson is without a doubt the King of Country. His style and lyrics have touched millions over the decades and attest to his longevity in a profession that looks for new faces constantly. Willie has a lot to teach about life, love and even ourselves. There are five important life lessons that we can learn from Willie, though he never intended to do anything more than entertain us.

Never Give Up

No matter what situation Willie has found himself in, he has never given up. Trouble with the IRS? Worked it out and even made a fortune by naming his next album “The IRS Tapes.” This goes to show that you can get through it if you just don’t give up, no matter what the situation.

Learn From Your Mistakes

Remember the trouble he had with the IRS? It was due to trusting the wrong people just because they were so-called experts. He didn’t do his homework but learned from that mistake and made his life better in the future. You can’t possibly make every mistake out there, so learn from the mistakes of others. If you keep making the same mistake over and over, you are just wasting time when you should be improving and living your life to the fullest.

Hard Work Will Take You Further than Shortcuts

Willie Nelson is not an overnight sensation, and he didn’t make it to Nashville on a whim. He started playing the guitar when he was six. He would play the guitar while his sister played the piano. For the next 20 years, he worked on perfecting his music. While it’s a work in progress, his success has come through a lifetime of hard work and dedication to music. No shortcuts here.

Keep Singing

Throughout his life, no matter what hardship or scandal, Willie keeps singing! In fact, at one point when he was charged with possession of marijuana, the prosecutor was willing to waive the $100 fine if he would sing a song for the court! Keep singing also means to keep calm and carry on; this too shall pass.

Be Yourself

If there is one thing that Willie Nelson has always done better than anyone else, it’s being Willie Nelson. From his distinctive style of clothing, hair and even his choice of guitars, he always takes the path that suits him. This is shown in every aspect of his life, be it music, politics or his activism. Willie Nelson is his own man and encourages others to be true to themselves.
