There isn’t much country in Anderson East’s new single “All On My Mind”, but there is very little to dislike about his soulful Nashville sound. If Glen Campbell, Justin Timberlake, and Ray Charles ever wrote a song, it probably would have sounded something like this.
East has always felt more at home with a horn section and an electric organ than a slide guitar and a fiddle. His full-throated, raspy voice owes more to Sun Records than any country tradition. Even so, East is at home with the country crowd. He regularly works with Nashville super-producer David Cobb and is currently dating Miranda Lambert.
His new single, “All On My Mind”, his first release since 2015’s Delilah, is about an intoxicating woman as comfortable wearing evening gown to a party as dancing barefoot in a bar. She brings out something in him, as he matches her move for move on the dance floor and at home. The tune, cowritten with Ed Sheeran (yes, that Ed Sheeran) is a forceful confession of passion and desire, punctuated by strings and gliding electric piano.
It is difficult to listen to this song only once.
You can catch East on the road with Chris Stapleton next month on Stapleton’s All-American Road Show. We can only hope that Stapleton performs this one with him. It would be one heck of a duet.
