There are plenty of divisions in this country. Far too often we define ourselves by what divides us. But the truth is that there is far more that unites us together. This was on display when Joe Biden joined “The View” yesterday, and consoled host Meghan McCain, daughter of Senator John McCain, as she discussed her father’s cancer diagnosis.

By our political reckoning, John McCain and Joe Biden should not be friends. They’re in different parties, for goodness sake! But the two have a life-long friendship despite their differing viewpoints. When Biden’s son was diagnosed with cancer, a battle he ultimately lost, Senator McCain was there encouraging and supporting him.

Earlier this year, McCain was diagnosed with the same kind of brain cancer that took Beau Biden.

So when Meghan McCain opened up about her father’s diagnosis and tears began to fall, Joe Biden moved next to her and gently took her hand.

“One of the things that gave my Beau courage, my word, was John. You may remember when you were a little kid, your dad took care of my Beau.”

“There is hope,” he continued. And if anybody can make it, your dad [can],” he said. “Her dad is one of my best friends…we’re like two brothers who were somehow raised by different fathers.”

It was the sort of hope, kindness, and care we all need more of this Christmas season.
