If you watched the 2016 Olympics at all, you remember Michael Phelps‘ famous, angry game face.

Here’s a reminder just in case.

Not two seconds after this footage hit the internet, Michael became a gif, meme and famous for more than just his unmatchable swimming ability.

Recently, the Olympic gold-medalist visited “The Tonight Show” to share the story behind the face and his thoughts on it becoming an internet phenomenon. According to Michael, he knew the face was going to be big before even leaving the ready room.

“The worst is, I was sitting in the ready room and I remember, like, I always know there’s two cameras in the upper right hand corner… And I’m sitting there like spitting water, like, ‘What Is going on?’ and like, as I’m making a face, I’m like, ‘Yep, that’s on camera,'” he laughed.
