As “Roseanne” sets to premiere as a reboot on March 27 on ABC, we’re learning more and more about what to expect from the show and the characters we grew to know and love from 1988 to 1997. For example, Dan is definitely alive. And he definitely died before. And both actresses who played Becky, Lecy Goranson and Sarah Chalke will be on the new season.

We’re also learning about some of the new characters being brought in. Darlene, has kids and one of those kids, Mark Conner-Healy likes to wear girls’ clothes. As “Roseanne” has always touched on real-life and political issues, this is no different.

Sara Gilbert, who plays Darlene, sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the character, “He’s not a transgender character. He’s a little boy. He’s based on a few kids in my life that are boys who dress in more traditionally feminine clothing. He’s too young to be gay and he doesn’t identify as transgender, but he just likes wearing that kind of clothing and that’s where he is at this point in his life.”

Gilbert also said she created the character because the show has never shied away from issues, “It represents the world. This is a show that’s always been able to represent the world and talk about it without being so issue-heavy. We can do it through the dynamics of the family.”
