I love children’s Christmas Pageants. Sure, they can be boring, but you never know what you’re going to get. Joseph may leave to hang out with the wise men. The angel may fall asleep onstage. Or, the sheep could steal baby Jesus and end up fighting with Mary.
The First Baptist Church of White Pine, TN was having a normal pageant until a 2-year-old sheep decided she was bored and needed to play Mommy with baby Jesus. The 3-year-old Mary was not having any of it and returned the baby to his manger. When the sheep took the baby again, a wrestling match began.
And all the while, the rest of the children sang “Away In A Manger” as if everything were normal.
“The little girl playing Mary is a middle child and a real stickler for the rules, and she knew that was not supposed to happen,” the sheep’s mother, Tana Benson, told a local news station. “When I went up to take Teegan’s hand and walk her off the stage, the little girl playing Mary said, ‘She touched the baby Jesus! We weren’t supposed to touch the baby Jesus!'”
Darn right! They should put guardrails around the manger next time.
