Taylor Swift’s lawyer is under fire for threatening a blogger who criticized the singer as a closeted racist. Now, the ACLU is involved calling Swift’s action, “A completely unsupported attempt to suppress constitutionally protected speech.” The moral of the story: never acknowledge a troll.
The blogger’s completely bogus post titled “Swiftly to the alt-right: Taylor subtly gets the lower case kkk in formation.” tried to make connections between Swift’s new album, reputation, past lyrics, and her refusal to endorse a presidential candidate last year to what she saw as support of white supremacy.
This is not the first time the internet has made spurious connections between Swift and the Alt-Right. A meme circulating on Pinterest put Adolf Hitler’s quotes over images of Swift, tricking people to think they were her own quotes. Her lawyer also argued against that calling it “harmful,” “libelous,” and “ethnically offensive.”
The Internet will always be a strange and sometimes scary place. It is best not to wade in its weeds. Pardon my insensitivity, but since this blogger only has 131 followers on Twitter maybe it would have been better for Swift to….shake it off.
