Old Taylor Swift is not dead, but New Taylor Swift is definitely a little different than her previous version and we’re not just talking sonically. Visually, New Taylor has really switched up her look from “did I go to high school with that girl?” to “oh, there’s that girl I went to high school with that girl.”
So, just what is going in New Taylor’s video for “…Ready For It?” In all likelihood only Taylor knows, but since there are two Taylors in the video, we have a better chance of figuring it out. Note: “Look What You Made Me Do” featured approximately 15 Taylors, so this is less to sort through, but still double the Taylor.
We meet Taylor1 in a dark, scary alley wearing some futuristic, expensive looking homeless type apparel. There are nods to movies like “Tron” and “Blade Runner.” The hooded, dark Taylor is bad and the Taylor trapped in a glass case (of emotion) is maybe not bad? Bad Taylor is trying to break naked Taylor out of the glass case.
Oh, there it is. Taylor wants Taylor out of that box you’ve put her in. Taylor is not who you think she is and she’s going to prove it to you by breaking herself out of the box.
Eventually, after a lot of lightning, (like, enough lightning to cancel several high school football games) Naked Taylor goes all “Harry Potter” (made that up, never seen it) and screams a scream so shrill the glass box breaks.
Now, both Taylors are out of the box. One, the Naked Taylor, is at the top of a staircase with one single tear running down her cheek and Bad Taylor is atop a platform which reads, “they’re burning all the witches.”
So, what’s going on here exactly? Great question. It’s simpler than it seems, but also a way over budget way of telling the world that the media has put Taylor in a box and now, she’s been freed. Someone, maybe that new boyfriend, freed here from the box.
Nobody puts baby in a box (or a corner). Not even Kanye. Or maybe it was Kanye, but it doesn’t matter because she’s been freed.
Taylor’s longtime collaborator, Joseph Kahn, directed the video.
“…Ready For It?” is the second song off of Taylor’s upcoming sixth studio album, reputation, due out November 10.
