Tom Hanks has signed on to play Mr. Rogers in an upcoming biopic called “You Are My Friend.” That’s right. Tom Hanks, national treasure, the last decent man in Hollywood, America’s Uncle, the Vice President for both Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Oprah, has been cast in one of the most perfect roles imaginable. All I want to know is when I can buy tickets.
The biopic follows Fred Rogers’ unlikely friendship with cynical journalist Tom Junod and is loosely based on the article Junod wrote for Esquire about Rogers “Can You Say…Hero?” The story follows Junod who is both cynical and frustrated over being assigned to write a story about Rogers. What he finds is a true, life-changing friendship.
So let’s put it all together: Tom Hanks in a feel-good movie about Mr. Rogers? I’m in.
