The Great War is coming to Westeros. That’s ominous enough, but on the hells of the war comes the long winter and those who walk in it. The new trailer for “Game of Thrones” Season 7 gives us a glimpse of the war, potential betrayal, and the real threat facing the realm of man.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD

Sansa, the character who has arguably suffered the most, is finally taking her life into her own hands. And yet, Petyr Baelish still lingers in the shadows telling Sansa to fight every war on every front at the same time. I’m no military expert, but that seems like bad advice.

No GIF has better encapsulated a character. Ever.

Then the trailer flies trough war scenes. White Walkers are everywhere. The Lannisters make a grand, and potentially final, stand against what appears to be the combined forces of Daenerys Targaryen. I even think I spotted Jorah of House Friendzone for a split second.

My prediction is that the season will be split in two: the north and the south. In the north, Jon will rally the forces to fight the white walkers. I am assuming that his speech during the trailer is directed at the other houses of the north, meaning all houses are needed to fight the army of undead. That includes Beric Dondarrion, the John the Baptist of Azor Ahai.

Just look at this screenshot: Tormund, Beric, Jon, and a few others against a mountain range-filling army of white walkers.

The North is protecting humanity while the south tears itself apart. The Lannisters, Greyjoys, Martells, and Daenerys are going into a war of fiery attrition. Expect consuming war in the South, for sure.

And then, the trailer ends where it began, with Sansa quoting her father, “When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives.” I have a feeling those words will bite against Jon Snow, the lone white wolf of the Stark children. I hope it isn’t, but George R.R. Martin knows how to make death matter. He waits until you hope in a character and truly believe in their success before he cuts them down. We will have to wait and see.

Season 7 premiers July 16 on HBO.
