I don’t know about you, but every winter I get so excited when I see eggnog back in the fridge at the grocery store. But this year, I wanted to try my hand at making my own– specifically a hard eggnog. As it turns out, it’s not that hard to make, and the final result is delicious.

  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 6 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/3 cup bourbon or rum (optional, but strongly recommended)
  • Whipped cream (for topping)

In a saucepan on medium heat, combine milk, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg, stir, and slowly bring the mixture to a boil. In a large bowl, whisk together egg yolks and sugar, then slowly add in the hot milk to egg yolks in batches and whisk until it’s well combined. Put the entire mixture back into the saucepan and cook on medium heat until it’s slightly thick, but not boiling. Remove from heat and stir in the heavy cream and booze, then refrigerate until cold. When you’re ready to serve, spray some whipped cream on top and sprinkle with a little bit of cinnamon!
