Grandparents get to play a very special role in the lives of their grandchildren. Being a grandparent definitely has its advantages and the perks are pretty darn good, too.
12 Perks of Being a Grandparent:
1. Rules? What rules?
When the grandkids come to play those 7:30 bedtimes go out the window, and who says you can’t have dessert before dinner? Grandparents remember the strict rules of parenthood that they used to follow with their own kids, but there’s just something about becoming a grandparent, that makes all those rules seem too strict and rigid.
2. Grammy is the name, and spoiling is the game.
You can tell a grandparent not to buy their grandchild a Christmas present, or birthday present, or random present, and it will go in one ear and out the other. Simply put, spoiling the grandkids, is just part of what it means to be a grandparent.
3. Awesome grandparent names .
I love the new trend of picking creative grandparent names. Gone are the days of simply being called “Grandma” and “Grandpa.” Instead, grandparents are choosing names like, “Gigi,” “Honey,” and “Mimsy” for grandmothers, and “Bobo,” “Boppa,” and “Poppy” for grandfathers. Sometimes it’s easier to just let the kids come up with the names. My son starting calling my dad, “Bonk,” and my dad actually loved it!
4. One-on-one time with grandkids .
My parents and in-laws love spending one-on-one time with each of my two boys. There are certain things that they can do with my 4-year-old that they can’t do with my 2-year-old. Plus, they love getting to know each of them as individuals, and sometimes one-on-one time makes that easier.
5. Watching your children as parents
My parents have loved watching their children become parents, especially getting to be in the hospital and seeing them hold their babies for the first time. Plus, parents remember what certain stages are like, and they are great at reminding their kids that it’s just a stage. Recently, I was complaining that my 2-year-old was refusing to nap, and my mom reminded me that I was the same way when I was his age.
6. Feeling like a kid again.
Grandkids have a way of making grandparents feel like kids again. Grandparents don’t merely sit on the sidelines and watch their grandkids play, they get in on the fun. Fishing, swimming, and going to theme parks– it’s all part of the grandparent package.
7. Giving grandkids back at the end of the day
Sometimes the best thing about having grandchildren is being able to give them back at the end of the day. Grandparents have already had their fair share of sleepless newborn nights and toddler tantrums, and if grandparents are honest, sometimes it’s nice to give the grandkids back at the end of the day.
8. Passing down family stories and traditions.
Being a grandparent, means passing down history, traditions, and family stories. My husband’s grandparents always used to sing certain songs with the grandkids at family reunions, and now my husband’s father seems those same songs to his adoring grandchildren. Grandparents are the keepers of traditions, and the grandkids won’t forget these special moments with their grandparents.
9. Showing off your pictures of your grandkids to everyone you meet.
My mom is notorious for keeping pictures of all of her grandkids in her purse. She shows them off to complete strangers at the checkout line or wherever she may be. She just loves showing off all of her grands!
10. Hosting a “Cousin Camp.”
Grandparents can hold “Cousin Camp” during the summers when their grandkids are old enough for overnight stays. “Cousin Camp” can be as simple as a movie night with popcorn and dessert or camping out in the backyard in tents. All the cousins will love the time together, and all their parents will be thankful for a night off too.
11. Baking with the grandkids .
There’s just something endearing about baking sweet treats with your grandkids. Yes, they may have flour all over their hands and faces. They may even lick the spoon and bowl so much that they need a bath, but it always ends with happy faces and full bellies.
12. Seeing all those firsts.
Perhaps, the best thing about being a grandparent is getting to see those first smiles, first steps, first bike rides, and all the other firsts. As a grandparent, you realize how quickly time goes by, and you soak up those moments, knowing that your grandchildren will be grown up all too soon.
