Being married is hard. Like, really hard. Who knew that moving in with your best friend would be so difficult?

But as with anything that is challenging, there are a lot of things that make it all totally worth it. And it’s not even the big things, it’s the little, unexpected advantages that make married life work.

Here are the 12 Unexpected Advantages of Being Married

1. Being able to communicate without words.

If my husband leaves a cabinet door open, all I have to do is look in the direction of the open door and he knows exactly what to do.

2. Unspoken language when playing guessing games.

You know each other so well, you know how your partner thinks making these games a breeze! Sometimes we can be a little out of sync, but the majority of the time, we are right on!

3. No more awkward dates.

Is there anything more awkward than a first date? No, there isn’t. Every time we are out and see one (married couples can spot a first date a mile away!) we nod knowingly at each other and know that we are both thinking, “Thank God we don’t have to go through that ever again!”

4. You always have a diet or workout buddy.

My husband helps keep my diet in check. Yeah, sometimes I want to smack him when he asks if I really need another glass of wine or helping of guacamole, but overall, I am thankful he is honest with me!

Hitting the gym alone ranks up there with trying on bathing suits. Nobody likes to do it. But if you are married, you can usually convince your spouse to exercise with you.

5. You always have a back-scratcher.

You know that hard-to-reach spot on your back that is always itchy? Yeah, that one. It’s nice to have someone who can reach it for you.

6. Being a total dork is acceptable.

Sometimes you just want to sing Taylor Swift songs at the top of your lungs. Or dance like the crazy lady in that Facebook video. You can’t really do that among strangers, but you can get away with it with your spouse!

7. You don’t have to be a fifth wheel.

We’ve all been there and it’s just weird and awkward and uncomfortable.

8. You have someone to share your crazy dreams with.

You may not feel comfortable telling your co-workers you’ve always dreamed of owning an Alpaca ranch in Montana, but you have no qualms sharing that with your spouse.

9. There is someone who never tires of hearing about your kids or pets.

Because, duh! They belong to your spouse too! Plus, you can talk about your kids’ weaknesses with your spouse and they will still love them.

10. Silence isn’t awkward.

In fact, sometimes silence is golden! There are occasions you just want to be with your spouse but not have to talk, and it’s totally okay.

11. You always look great.

No matter how bad you really look, your spouse still thinks you are beautiful!

12. There is always someone to come home to.

Even if they aren’t there right when you get home after a long day, you know they are coming home and that is strangely comforting.
