I know we use whiskey a lot in the winter (hello eggnog!) but I think it can be quite refreshing any time of the year. There are tons of fun summer cocktails that include whiskey, including the classics like whiskey and ginger ale (a favorite of mine), whiskey and sprite, and whiskey and coke (diet coke for the diet conscious out there). But, here are a few whiskey cocktails you may not have thought of. Each and every one is perfect for the summertime!

1. Whiskey and Grapefruit Juice

There is a new brand of white whiskey that would be stellar in this drink that you could try instead of the regular whiskey.

Ingredients:

2 oz Whiskey

4 oz Grapefruit Juice

1 tsp local honey

Rosemary for garnish

Directions:

Combine all ingredients over ice and stir. Add the rosemary as a garnish.

2. Whiskey Mojito

Ingredients:

2 oz Whiskey

4 oz Club Soda

Fresh lime

Fresh mint

Directions:

In the bottom of a highball glass, muddle your mint leaves until they become aromatic. Add your lime juice, whiskey, stir. Top with club soda.

3. Black Cherry Whiskey Cocktail

Ingredients:

2 oz Whiskey

4 oz Black Cherry Soda (I’m partial to Shasta, but whatever floats your boat. This may be a time where you need to buy Black Cherry Dr. Pepper.)

Directions:

Pour your chilled whiskey over ice, and add Black Cherry Soda. Stir well to combine, and enjoy!

4. Porch Crawler

This is a drink that will sneak up on you if you let it.

Ingredients:

2 oz Whiskey

2 oz Sweet Tea Vodka

1 tsp local honey

Lemon juice to taste

Directions:In a shaker, combine honey, whiskey, lemon juice and sweet tea vodka. (for a lighter version, just use sweet tea) with ice, shake the shaker for about a minute, or until the outside becomes frosty. Pour that mixture over ice, and enjoy with a lemon slice.

5. Strawberry Whiskey Sour

Ingredients:

2 oz Whiskey

Fresh strawberries

Sweet and Sour mix

Mint for garnish

Directions:

Muddle your fresh strawberries at the bottom of the glass, and then pour in your whiskey and sweet and sour. Stir to combine, then pour over a new glass filled with ice, and garnish with mint. Sip slowly and enjoy the summer!
