George Strait hooked me long ago with “Baby Blue,” and I have been a fan ever since. Listening to George reminds me of college, dollar pitchers at the dance hall, frat parties, and wide open Texas ranch land. I grew up in Fort Worth, and I always felt like he was singing to me when he crooned, “Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind?” Yes, George, it does. And it reminds me of my mom’s wonderful cookies and cakes!

Baking while George sings in the background helps me relax and really enjoy the process. “I Got a Car” fits the bill perfectly. My recipe for Candy Oat Cookies makes a ton, and they stay fresh for a week in an airtight container. These delightful treats are perfect for any road trip!

Candy Oat Cookies

“I’m ready when you are.”

Ingredients:

1 cup butter or margarine, softened

½ cup granulated sugar

½ cup firmly packed light brown sugar

1 large egg

2 cups all purpose flour

½ cup old-fashioned oats, uncooked

1 teaspoon cream of tartar

½ teaspoon baking soda

¼ teaspoon salt

1 ¾ cups M&Ms

1 cup toasted rice cereal

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350. In large bowl, cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy; beat in egg. In medium bowl, combine flour, oats, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt; blend flour mixture into creamed mixture. Stir in M&Ms and cereal. Drop dough (a heaping tablespoonful) about 2 inches apart onto un-greased cookie sheets. Bake 10 to 13 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool on wire racks.

Makes about 4 dozen.

Holiday tip:

You can tailor these for any holiday by using specialty bags of M&Ms. I can usually find Christmas colors, Valentine colors, and Spring/Easter colors. I have not been able to find patriotic colors for Memorial Day or the Fourth of July. Instead, I buy two regular bags and have my kids pick out the red and blue ones. I will only add about 1 ¼ cups of the M&Ms and add ½ cup of white chocolate chips.
