They say that everyone has to start somewhere, but you won’t believe what some of our favorite country stars were doing before they were famous.
7. Garth Brooks
Garth Brooks might seem like a gentle teddy bear cowboy now, but there was a time when breaking up bar fights was his job. In fact, one of those fights involved his first wife and another woman in a bathroom brawl. We’re so glad Garth made his way out of the bar and onto the stage. He has come a long way from his days as a bouncer at the Tumbleweed Ballroom in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
6. Eric Church
Have you ever ordered anything from the Shop at Home Network? If so, chances are you might have talked to Eric Church! But according to Eric, you might not have successfully purchased anything. Eric was fired for talking people out of buying stuff he didn’t think they really needed. When people called at 2am to order “junk”, he assumed they were drunk and tried to talk them out of it. What a great guy!
5. Jason Aldean
Every aspiring artist dreams of making it big. But, some do it while delivering Pepsi to the local Circle K. Yep. Jason Aldean was a Pepsi delivery driver before hitting mega fame! Those days are over and we are thankful!
4. Dierks Bentley
You won’t guess what Dierks Bentley did before breaking out. Seriously, you won’t. And we’re not sure why anyone would take this “crappy” job. Dierks had the job of cleaning out the toilet lines on house boats. He once told a Nashville radio station, “It usually had a week’s worth of ‘stuff’ in there from the 10 to 12 houseboat guests, and once, the old machine used to empty the toilets backfired, sending the hose and all the stuff straight up into the air. I tried to outrun the ‘rain’….but got nailed.” Wow.
3. Kacey Musgraves
Kacey Musgraves didn’t have it as bad as some of these artists, but I wouldn’t say she had it easy. Before finding Nashville success after writing Miranda Lambert‘s “Mama’s Broken Heart,” Kacey had to keep the lights on. What did she do? She dressed up and sang for parties…mostly kid’s parties. She once got asked “to dress up as a French maid and deliver balloons to an industry birthday party at the Palm”. She said no, but that party ended up being for Blake Shelton! “I would have never lived it down”, said Kacey. We definitely agree with you, Kacey.
2. Tim McGraw
Tim McGraw is country music royalty. These days he can afford to do whatever he wants. Sometimes he sings. Sometimes he acts. But the one thing I doubt he’ll ever do again…clean shopping carts from grocery stores?? One of the many jobs that Tim had before finding success in the music business. And how was the cart cleaning business? “You ever washed a shopping cart in 20-degree weather?” says McGraw.
1. Reba McEntire
Ask anyone in the business, Reba has a reputation in country music for getting it done and taking no crap. It seems that growing up on a ranch taught her that life as a cowgirl wouldn’t be an easy road. And the path to mega stardom would be just as hard. But no matter the job, she got it done. One of the jobs on the ranch was helping her dad turn bulls into steers. Reba says, “I would stand behind the bull and hold his tail while Daddy sliced the sack and cut the cord and let the testicles fall…Daddy would pass the testicles to me and I’d put them in a bucket.” Not many can say they’d have the “balls” to do that job.
