If you are visiting the Redneck Riviera this summer, there are a few things you should know. You don’t want to miss out on any of the wonderful things this stretch of coastline has to offer! No matter what type of vacation you are going for, from a relaxing one to one that is action packed, the Redneck Riviera has something for everyone!

DOs and DON’Ts: Vacationing in the Redneck Riviera

DO: Visit multiple beaches. As tempting as it may be to stay at the beach closest to where you are staying, there are many beautiful, public options that have a lot to offer. Some beaches are known for larger waves, some for a quiet surf, while others are known for great seashells. Do your research to find the beaches that suit you for the day.

DON’T: Forget to plan rainy day activities! You may be one of the lucky few who escapes without at least one rainy day, but if you are like the majority, you will need a plan!

DO: Visit the historical sites in the area! Pensacola is home to the Spanish Fort, Fort Pickens, The Pensacola Lighthouse and Museum, and the National Naval Aviation Museum. Travel just a few hours North and you can tour the SS Alabama Battleship in Mobile. There is a lot of history to be discovered and each of these sites is close to a beach so you can get your history lesson along with beach time.

DON’T: Forget to plan site-seeing tours! Especially if you have never been to the area, this is a great way to see all the best sites. From boat tours looking for dolphins to bus tours around the communities, you don’t want to miss the hot spots!

DO: Decide where you are going to eat as far in advance as you can and make reservations when possible. The Redneck Riviera is a travel hot spot and the wait for restaurants can be up to 2 hours if you wait too long trying to decide where to go.

DO: Make plans to take some lessons! Take a photography class, learn to paddle board or even how to catch a wave while surfing. You could also try your hand at sand castle lessons which is great class to take with the family. One of our favorites is learning how to cook local fare, which is a skill you can take home with you. Use your vacation time as an opportunity to expand your horizons!

DON’T: Forget about the simplicity of beach life. Rent a bicycle and ride between the beach towns rather than driving. We promise you will see things you missed when whizzing by in a vehicle.

DO: Look for hidden gems when researching restaurants. Beach towns are known to have some of the best dives in the country! Ask the locals. They can tell you the places they like to eat, just don’t be surprised if you find yourself in the back of a retro gas station eating delicious food.

DON’T: Forget the shopping in the Redneck Riviera is second to none! From high-end boutiques to outlet malls and even a few tacky but fun souvenir shops, make sure to include a little retail therapy time in your schedule!

DO: Remember the best part of the panhandle can be the tourist attractions. It may sound cliche’, but playing Putt-Putt Golf or riding Go-carts can be a fun way to let out your inner child. Pro Tip: If you do these things at night, it won’t be as hot. (Note we said, “as hot.” ) If you prefer a daytime activity, there is a great water park in Destin that will keep you cool while having fun!

We hope this helps make your trip to the Redneck Riviera a great one!
