We’ve all done it. Stood in front of our closet that is packed full of clothes, shoes and accessories, yet finding nothing to wear. Now that spring is finally here it’s time for a fresh start! Everything seems so much more exciting when we transition from cold to warm weather. And a good spring cleaning of your closet is an important part of that process.

While it may seem like a chore at first, nothing feels better than a freshly purged closet. And the upside to a spring purge? You’ll know exactly what pieces you need giving you the perfect excuse to go shopping!

These simple tips will have your closet cleaned up so quickly – you’ll wonder why you have to wait for spring!

Piles Are Your Friend

Not exactly a scientific method, piles are a very easy, visual way to clean up your closet. You should have three piles: Yes, no and maybe. Move things one at a time from your closet placing items in piles until everything is in a pile. This includes belts, handbags, accessories, shoes….you get the point! Once everything is in a pile, go through the “maybe” pile once again and make final yes or no decision. Donate the “no” pile to a local charity so someone else can enjoy them and you can enjoy your newfound space.

Be Honest

If you haven’t worn an item in the past year, chances are – you aren’t wearing it again. That means, as Queen Elsa would say, “Let it Go”. One of our favorite tricks to determine how long it has been since you’ve worn an item is to hang all your hangers up backward while you are spring cleaning. As you wear those items, re-hang the hanger the correct way. The following year, the hangers that are still backward – didn’t get worn. This is a surefire way to see exactly what needs to go.

The toughest thing to be honest with yourself about is items that are too small. We all have those great intentions of losing weight to fit back into that pair of jeans, but again, if it’s been more than a year….it’s probably not going to happen. Time to get rid of those and if you do lose the weight {we hope you do!} you can reward yourself with new jeans!

With so many organizational items out there today – if your closet isn’t organized – do it this spring! Pack away winter coats and sweaters in plastic boxes. Have labeled storage bins for belts, hats, scarves and other accessories. Store winter boots and shoes to save space as well. Not only does an organized closet look better; it saves you a significant amount of time while picking out your daily outfit.

This is one concept that can make your entire year easier! Put all like things together. All your tank tops in one drawer, capri pants or t-shirts in another. And yet another place for socks, tights and leggings. Group your jeans by style, skinny, boot cut, dark to light. Group shirts by sleeve length and color. Same thing works with accessories. Some accessories are seasonal – group them accordingly.

Nothing damages clothing like humidity. Luckily, there is a very simple and inexpensive way to combat this issue. Bundle 6 pieces of chalkboard chalk with a pretty ribbon and hang from a hook inside your closet. Make sure it isn’t touching any clothing and is in plain view so that it can absorb the moisture. You clothes will look and smell fresher almost immediately!

We hope this helps you spring clean your closets this season! What tips do you have for organizing closets?
