As a person who likes to be in the know concerning any and all things pop culture, I watch the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show every year for a number of reasons. A few years ago, Taylor Swift was the main performer (it’s literally how she met most of her original #squad members) and now, I watch to see if I can guess the themes in advance– tiny precious dog loving angels or something more simple like hipster angels.

This year, I really wanted to see how one of those guys (Leslie Odom Jr.) from Hamilton was going to fit into the performers list. Seemed like an interesting stretch to find a group of people who love Broadway and love Victoria’s Secret enough to watch an hour of TV on a Tuesday past 9 p.m. Or maybe Vicky is trying to expand their target demographic? Who knows.

Turns out, Odom’s appearance and presence was even bigger than expected because during his medley of “Forever Young” and “Winter Song,” (honestly, I was disappointed he didn’t sing from the soundtrack. Give the people what they want, y’all.) model Ming Xi took a tumble, much like Scarlet from the infamous YouTube video.

Xi was walking the runway in her hometown of Shanghai and as she walked she did one of those more noise motions to the crowd. It felt like CBS managed to play that part in slow motion or something before actually showing the fall.

As Xi was on the ground, CBS edited in producer’s audio.

“Ming is down!”

“Oh my goodness!”

“Can she get up? Is she okay?”

“Gizele’s got it!”

Gizele Oliveira graciously sped up her walk and clapped as she helped up Xi. Then, she completely stopped walking to still give Xi her moment at the end of the runway. Karlie Kloss was behind Oliveira and she kind of did that that thing like a runner in a baseball game who’s rounding first base and heading to second only to find his teammate is also heading back to second base.

As Xi rounded the corner to get herself off the runway as quickly and graciously as a model can in 27-inch heels and a headpiece made of unicorn bones, Kloss gave her some stage mom jazz hands to let her know and the rest of the world know– shit happens.

When Xi finally got backstage she broke down in full-on sobs as a producer/angel corral manager reached out his hands to her.

The fall, overall, lasted about 90 seconds. That’s a long time when you’re paying for primetime TV.

Earlier this week, CBS told People, “Don’t expect to see this moment in the final cut of the fashion show when it airs on CBS. Victoria’s Secret traditionally tapes two run-throughs of the show for this very reason, so the tumble will likely be removed from the final show.”

I was fine with that and expected that. And it turns out, I wanted that to be the case.

I’m not a woman who looks at a model, on the ground or otherwise, and considers myself less than because I don’t look like her. I’m also not a woman who watches this show and thinks I need to look like these women to be considered worth something. I watch it to see if Taylor Swift is going to be around, okay?

But, also, after watching the fall (several times), I decided it was a little much to show on TV. If we’re going to show unattainable beauty standards the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving to people all over the world, let’s go full-throttle on that commitment. A model’s one job, first and foremost, is to walk down a runway, turn and walk back. I want to see these ladies excel at that, not fail miserably.

Is Victoria’s secret going to advertise, “get the bra the model who fell was wearing for that special lady in your life this Christmas?” No, they’re going to show Lily Aldridge riding a horse in a bra and tell you to buy that bra for the special lady in your life.

The fall was too much. Let’s all agree that models on their feet are the best models and the models we want on our TVs.

Xi, on Instagram, shared a little bit about her moment on stage, “As many of you may already know, I fell during my 5th year walking at the Victoria’s Secret show yesterday. It was no doubt one of the hardest moments I have ever had to go through in my career, especially since the show was taking place in my hometown, in front of my mother’s and my people’s eyes. However, the support I received from everyone yesterday was incredible and I am truly grateful to everyone who was there for me. @ed_razek Thank you for your supportive words and your continuous support throughout these 7 years. @giizeleoliveira Thank you for helping me up after the fall, it was a very selfless and loving act from you. Thank you to all the girls who rushed to comfort me at backstage after what had happened, you are all family to me. Lastly thank you to everyone who sent and left me supportive messages. I will pick myself up from where I fell, and I will keep going in order to repay all the support you all have given me!!”

She’s going to recover. And that’s a good thing.
