Theory: “The Voice” Coaches Usually Pick the Contestant Wearing the Cooler Outfit

Season 12 of “The Voice” is barely under way, but it’s already heating up. The most recent episode of Battles actually brought criticism from coach Adam Levine and advisor John Legend. Something I’ve never really seen on the show, as there are no Simon Cowell figures around to dish out honest advice very often.

The round of criticism made something stand out to me though– coaches on “The Voice” almost always pick the better dressed contestant. Sometimes, “better” isn’t the right word– sometimes, it’s the trendier singer.

Johnny Hayes vs. Julien Martinez

This was the most equal battle so far on “The Voice.” Personally, I thought Julien was the clear winner, but obviously Johnny’s suit is a little cooler and he looks like less of an accountant. The cool guy look is so overdone in the music world– why can’t a guy who looks like fancy lawyer win?

JChosen vs. Kenny P.

It’s like Gwen knew no one would vote for the guy dressed like a newsie.

Caroline Sky vs. Stephanie Rice

Musically, this pairing was not good for either singer. Both faltered and tried to match the other, completely different singer, too many times. Caroline looked like she was going to her cousin’s wedding on a cruise ship and Stephanie looked like an actual rockstar. Of course, Stephanie won.

Ashley Levin vs. Casi Joy

It’s not either of these outfits were cooler or trendier, but Ashley’s was kind of drab compared to Casi’s flapper dress.

Aaliyah Moulden vs. Dawson Coyle

I’m Southern, so yeah, I love a good bowtie. But, I like them when wedding guests wear them. Or when some frat daddy shows up to a tailgate in one. Sweet Dawson is young and fun, but he looked like a try-hard teacher’s assistant on the first day of Sociology 101 in this outfit.

Josh West vs. Nala Price

Somebody should get fired.

Gaby Borromeo vs. Mark Isaiah

Gaby looks like she’s going to church with her grandmother and Mark is the cool guy at his high school reunion. Not fair.

Josh Hoyer vs. TSoul

Entertainment Weekly called this decision, “an easy, decisive victory.”

Yeah, duh, look what they made Josh wear. He looks like a sad recurring character on “Scooby Doo.”
