Great dates don’t have to involve fancy vacations or five-star restaurants. Sometimes, you just want to be able to wear your jeans and boots and not worry about getting a little dirty. Here are five fun date ideas  to try when you need a change of pace.

Explore Your Own Backyard

One of the most romantic places to be is outside in nature, and hiking can be a fun experience for a first date or for long-term couples who want to try something new. Shorter trails can be covered in an hour or two, but you can take it one step further with a whole-day hike. Packing a picnic lunch and finding a clearing or a flat piece of rock can give you an opportunity to rest but keep the conversation going.

Go for a Swim

Public pools are convenient, but the concrete and chlorine don’t really inspire much romance. When you want to get a little more adventurous and try something out of the ordinary, heading to the local swimming hole, lake or even creek can up the country factor and give your wallet a break. There’s something decidedly down-home about jumping into the smooth, tree-lined water of a lake that brings back some childhood excitement and adds an extra spark to your romance.

Hit Up the Local Fairs

County fairs are a great way to spend a day or evening. There’s no shortage of things to do or see, and entry costs are normally less than $10 a person, making these a good option if you’re trying to stick to your budget. You can plan to attend a certain event, like a tractor pull or horse show, or hit up the after-dark scene for a romantic Ferris wheel ride. Sitting down at a table and people watching can also be a great way to spark some interesting conversations with your significant other.

Do Some Night Fishing

Moonlit strolls next to the water have long been the go-to for romantic movie scenes, and you can take this idea and put a fun twist on it by adding in some fishing. Night fishing is the best of both worlds, giving you a quiet atmosphere that’s perfect for intimate conversations and providing the excitement of hooking and reeling in the next big catch.

Look at the Stars

For those who can get out of the city with an hour or two by driving, a night of stargazing can be a relaxing and almost free date. Lining the bed of a pickup truck with blankets and pillows keeps you comfortable and cozy, but you can also bring some blankets to sit on and a thermos of hot chocolate to stay warm if you have to walk a bit to get to the best stargazing spot. Try planning your trip around a meteor shower for the best view.

Of course, the possibilities don’t end here. There are plenty of relaxing, low-cost date ideas that you can take advantage of around your local neighborhood with a little bit of creativity.
