If you have purchased a new bathing suit recently, you know a quality suit isn’t cheap. And that means you want it to look great for several seasons if not forever!

These tips will help extend the life of your favorite bathing suit so you can wear it for years to come.

1. Forget the old rule that you shouldn’t wash your bathing suit.

Wash your suit with a mild detergent and water every time you wear it. Rinsing with water alone will not remove sweat, chlorine and salt. This is so easy to do! All you have to do is fill a sink with cool water, add a teaspoon of detergent and gently swish for a few minutes with your hands. Rinse with clean, cool water and dry.

2. Speaking of drying, the clothes dryer is your swim suit’s worst enemy.

Never, ever dry your bathing suit in the dryer! Heat will break down the fibers causing the suit to lose its shape. And don’t even think about laying it out in the sun. The sun will fade the suit making the colors appear dull and washed out. Lay flat, indoors.

3. Don’t stick with just one bathing suit.

Wearing the same suit every time you hit the water will cause it to break down more quickly. Alternating between 2 or even 3 suits will give the lycra/spandex time to “resize” itself.

4. Just say “No” to hot tubs.

The hot water plus the chemicals wreak havoc on your bathing suits. We recommend wearing an older (or less expensive!) suit you aren’t as attached to and save your favorite for everything else.

5. Watch where you sit.

Pool decks are notoriously rough to prevent slipping. This is bad news for bathing suits and can cause snags and runs. Try to sit on a towel even if the deck feels smooth to the touch. You don’t want to risk ruining your favorite suit!

Follow these tips and your bathing suit should stay in tip-top shape longer!
