Kacey Musgraves‘ commitment to staying true to herself and her rural roots as garnered her several awards, fans in Katy Perry and Willie Nelson, and now, the cover of Fader Magazine. Kacey is the first country music singer to grace the cover of the edgy music magazine. The Fader‘s deputy editor, Duncan Cooper, joined Kacey on tour in her home state of Texas to discuss her upcoming sophomore album, Pageant Material, her early beginnings in the music industry, what it’s like being a woman in the country music world, and how breaking today’s country mold has made her into the artist she is today.
The in-depth interview is pure Kacey– honest, raw and real. She doesn’t hold back when asked about women on the radio, being famous and the difference between her style of music and the country music actually played on the radio.
On Her Style of Music:
“The more country that my music gets, the less it fits into the country world today. It’s almost like there needs to be two genres, modern country and… country?”
On The Radio:
“There was this cycle in Nashville where if you were a girl, you had to be really sassy: ‘You cheated on me, so I’m going to burn your house down… I’ve never felt a kinship to those kinds of songs. I love John Prine, his witty turns of phrase. I love Glenn Campbell, Marty Robbins, Loretta Lynn. There was this really imaginative and whimsical period of country music where instead of trying to match a trend, people became popular because they were unique.”
“The idea of massive amounts of fame—having my face on Walgreens end-caps and pizza boxes—I don’t fantasize about that.”
On Who She Aspires to be Like:
“She’s [Alison Krauss] managed to maintain her privacy and her sanity, so it seems, and her witty sense of humor. She’s never wavered from where she started out. She’s got, like, 27 Grammys, and she hasn’t been beaten into the ground. I’ve never heard anyone say they’re sick of Alison Krauss.”
For country music’s sake, hopefully no one gets sick of Kacey Musgraves anytime soon either.
