With the rise of “The Voice” and recruited contestants on reality TV competitions, the world has sorely missed those kind of sad, kind of delusional contestants that really think they’re the next big thing. But, finally, the most recent episode of “American Idol” gave us one in Audriana Bolton.
Bolton came to the show saying she was trained in opera, which is “arguably the hardest to sing, the hardest type of singing ever” according to her. She also said she “taught herself” how to sing pop and that people compared her to Ariana Grande and Mariah Carey. Like Kelly Clarkson before her Bolton chose to sing Aretha Franklin’s “Natural Woman,” for the judges. Before starting she told them, “I really want to impress you.”
But, these faces happened:
As Bolton finished up, Lionel Richie tried to get to the bottom of what he heard. Bolton then explained that her biggest inspiration is Mariah Carey and she could do a whistle tone, like Carey. The sound that followed was not a sound that Carey has ever made or likely wants to be associated with.
If “American Idol” wants to beat “The Voice,” they have to bring back the bad auditions– the once even worse than this one. We need the William Hungs as much as we need the Carrie Underwoods.
