Actor Ansel Elgort, best known for his roles in The Fault in Our Stars and the “Divergent” series, is speaking out after being accused of sexual assault.

The woman, who claims it happened when she was seventeen, shared the accusation in a now deleted Twitter post. Since the post, Ansel, now 26, has responded to the Tweet.

“I was distressed to see the social media posts about me that have been circulating in the past 24 hours,” he wrote in a post on Instagram. “I cannot claim to understand Gabby’s feelings but her description of events is simply not what happened. I have never and would never assault anyone. What is true is that in New York in 2014, when I was 20, Gabby and I had a brief, legal and entirely consensual relationship.”

He went on to reveal that he didn’t handle the situation well.

“Unfortunately, I did not handle the breakup well,” he added. “I stopped responding to her, which is an immature and cruel thing to do to someone. I know this belated apology does not absolve me of my unacceptable behavior when I disappeared. As I look back at my attitude, I am disgusted and deeply ashamed of the way I acted. I am truly sorry. I know I must continue to reflect, learn, and work to grow in empathy.

According to Variety, @Itsgabby posted on her now deleted Twitter account that she was “sexually assaulted a couple days after I turned 17” by the actor. In the Tweet,  she revealed that she sent a DM to Elgort, not expecting a response, because she was a fan.. When she got one giving her his private Snapchat account, the two  continued.

“So when it happened instead of asking me if I wanted to stop having sex knowing it was my first time and I was sobbing in pain and I didn’t want to do it the only words that came out of his mouth were ‘we need to break you in,’” she wrote in a Tweet, according to Variety. “I WASN’T there in that moment mentally. I disassociated myself and just felt like my mind was gone I was in shock.”

“I couldn’t leave I was only 5’2 and 98 pounds,” she continued. “He made me think this is how sex was supposed to be. I WAS SO YOUNG AND HE KNEW THAT. He as well said stuff like ‘you’re going to be such a beautiful young lady when you’re older.’ I was f—ing 17.”

In addition, the woman revealed that Elgort also allegedly asked  for nude photos and a threesome with one of her underage “dance friends.”

Elgort confirmed the two met in NY in 2014 and shared a relationship. As to the way the relationship happened, the two parties  appear to have different accounts.

Elgort was last seen in the The Goldfinch with Nicole Kidman and Sarah Paulson in 2019. He’s set to play Tony in the 2020 remake of West Side Story, which is currently in post production.
