The brand new Beverly Hills 90210 premiered on FOX on Wednesday (August 7) without one of its own – Luke Perry. Yet his absence was marked many times and in many ways during the hour long show.
Fans will recall that Perry passed away in March as a result of a stroke. He was just 52 years old at the time of his death.
In the opening minutes of the show, cast members Tori Spelling, Jennie Garth, Jason Priestley, Ian Ziering, Brian Austin Green, and Gabrielle Carteris are seen reuniting at the airport for a scheduled reunion.
“I like that the anniversary brought us together,” Carteris says. “I can’t believe that we are all here.”
“I wish that were true,” Priestley responds as the sad music plays.
Towards the middle of the show, Spelling can be seen on a private airplane, telling her fellow cast how happy she is that they are all together again.
“We’re not all going to be here forever,” says Spelling before Priestly does a toast to Perry. “But we made something that will be.”
But perhaps the most poignant tribute came at the conclusion of the show, when Spelling and Garth are seen on the couch together watching old scenes from the original show.
“Welcome to paradise, man,” Perry says in the vintage clip. “Welcome to your dream come true.”
The shoe ends with a still shot of Perry in his signature car with the words “For our friend, Luke Perry. 1966-2019.”
It was a fitting tribute.
