Earlier this year, Team USA’s Bode Miller and his wife, Morgan, lost their 19-month-old daughter, Emmy, after she drowned in a neighbor’s pool. Then, their grief was met with joy as they welcomed a son, Easton Vaughn Rek Miller, into the world.
In an interview with Today, Miller revealed his newborn son’s name, as well as the sweet meaning behind it. “We just called him baby brother and everyone thought we were just crazy,” Miller said. “It took us three weeks, but once you got to know him it was really clear.”
As it turns out, Easton’s name came from Miller’s hometown of Easton, New Hampshire. As for the middle names, Miller said his wife, Morgan, wasn’t pleased, but they compromised. “She’s nuts about it not being his name, but I pushed it through. But I think we have a good compromise system,” he said.
Miller said their new baby boy has helped them heal from the unthinkable. “If there’s one thing that can kind of help to heal and fill that spot in your heart, it’s a baby and he’s a special one. Besides the lack of sleep, it’s been a really nice process to be able to go through,” he said.
“There’s a blessing to being so busy,” he continued. “We see the path forward a little bit. It’s just kind of, keep it going and trying to stay positive, but it’s not easy. I don’t think it gets that much easier.”
