Kylie Jenner faced backlash after throwing a Gilead-themed party based off the popular Hulu series, The Handsmaid’s Tale over the weekend.
“I’m screaming!!! How and why did Kylie Jenner have a handmaids tale party and manage to hypersexualize the freaking red robes —THIS IS THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT MARGARET ATWOOD WANTED,” @gilltraino wrote.
“I honestly believe Kylie Jenner did NOT understand The Handmaids Tale if she’s throwing a themed party about it,” added @thebossthehoss.

The 21-year-old billionaire posted some video of the party thrown for her friend Anastasia Karanikolaou’s birthday, sharing the set up and decorations with a walk through before the party began.
“You know The Handmaid’s Tale is my favorite show ever, so welcome to Gilead,” Kylie said in the video. She even posted a selfie all decked out in the famous red robes.

But when one of the stars of the show, Bradley Whitford, appeared on The Talk, he was asked his opinion about the party and clearly he believes Kylie missed the point of the show.
“I don’t know. It seems a little tacky,” Bradley said to audience cheers. “You know, that costume is so kind of iconic and it’s interesting how it’s changed from initially a symbol of oppression to, now as the show is moving ahead, to a symbol of resistance. So, yeah, a cocktail party seems to sort of dash all that significance.”
Bradley stars in the second season of The Handmaid’s Tale as Commander Lawrence, a Commander in the Republic of Gilead and head of the fourth household in which Emily, played by Alexis Bledel, was temporarily enslaved as a Handmaid.
Guess Kylie should think twice before she throws her next party.
New episodes of Handmaid’s Tale will air on Wednesdays on Hulu.
