Ryan Reynolds Discusses Lifelong Struggle With Anxiety: “I’ve Been to the Depths”

-

It’s easy to look at Ryan Reynolds and assume he has it all. I mean, the guy is married to Blake Lively, has worldwide fame and recognition and has more fans than one could probably count. But, at the end of the day, he’s still human.

“I have anxiety, I’ve always had anxiety,” Reynolds told the New York Times. “Both in the lighthearted ‘I’m anxious about this’ kind of thing, and I’ve been to the depths of the darker end of the spectrum, which is not fun.”

Reynolds said he uses humor to cope– which would explain the personality we all know and love when we see him on the big screen.

“When the curtain opens, I turn on this knucklehead, and he kind of takes over and goes away again once I walk off set,” he said. “That’s that great self-defense mechanism. I figure if you’re going to jump off a cliff, you might as well fly.”

He shared that as a child, he spent a lot of time attempting to not agitate his father by keeping their home super clean.

“I became this young skin-covered micromanager,” he said. “When you stress out kids, there’s a weird paradox that happens because they’re suddenly taking on things that aren’t theirs to take on.”

Reynolds is starring in the new Marvel movie, “Deadpool 2,” in theaters May 18.
