In a brand new interview with In Depth host Graham Bensinger, former NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. got quite candid about his life and his loves, and just how close he was to walking away from the love of his life.

“Me and Amy were having a hard time figuring out how to make our relationship work,” Earnhardt says of some of the tough times alongside wife Amy, who he began dating back in 2009. “Every day was like grinding gears. Just a lot of tension and disagreement and misunderstanding, and there were great times — and then there were days when we would both sort of withdraw and get frustrated with each other and not communicate and hold grudges.”

Luckily, the couple found their way into therapy, and ended up saving their relationship. Through that therapy, some things came to light that had Earnhardt making some changes.

“I was a really, really immature person,” says Earnhardt, who is the proud father of little Isla Rose, who the couple welcomed to the world last April. “I was a child inside when it came down to it… I didn’t know how to be thoughtful, generous. We had the potential to be great and have a great family together but if we didn’t have [a therapist] I don’t think that we would have met that potential.”
