Bachelor in Paradise‘s Demi Burnett and her love Kristian Haggerty are going their separate ways. After making history on the show by becoming the first same-sex couple to be paired on the reality series, it’s over.

Demi appeared on Bachelor in Paradise in season 6 after vying for the heart of Colton Underwood in The Bachelor. She struck up a romance with Derek Peth, only to break his heart when she revealed she had someone back home. Usually frowned upon on dating shows, Demi’s love interest was Kristian Haggerty and she was invited to build her relationship further on the series, something never before done.

Although they hit a rough patch in paradise, the season ended with a loving speech and  proposal. Fast forward to today and Demi and Kristian are singing a different tune. In a lengthy post on Instagram, Demi shared the news about the end of the relationship.

“What has always been at the forefront of our relationship is love and care for one another,” she began. “Our priority is doing what is best for us. With a heavy heart full of love for one another we have decided it is best for us to take a step back from our relationship. We ultimately want what is best for us in the long run and for us right now, that means being apart and growing individually.”

We will forever be proud of the impact our love story has made and we hope it has helped others feel more accepted and confident within themselves. We hope it reminded others they aren’t alone and don’t need to be ashamed of who they are. And we hope it shows that two people can love one another in different ways and for us right now that is apart. But we remain committed to encouraging each other, supporting each other and continuing forward in a way best for us.
