Whether you have brains or beauty or both, cancer can smack you upside the head purely to remind you that you are mortal. And yes, that’s exactly what happened to actress Marcia Cross.

Back in 2017, the former Desperate Housewives star found out that she had anal cancer, a condition that was ultimately uncovered during Cross’ annual gynecology exam. And now, two years later, Cross says she is in remission and has a low chance of a recurrence. However, she wants to make sure people realize that they need to listen to their bodies, no matter who they are.

“If something doesn’t feel right, listen to your body and talk to your doctor,” Cross tells People magazine. “Don’t let it go. It’s a very curable cancer if caught early, which mine was.”

She also wants to take away the stigma that often comes with one receives an anal cancer diagnosis.

“I want to help put a dent in the stigma around anal cancer,” the 57-year-old says. “I’ve read a lot of cancer-survivor stories, and many people, women especially, were too embarrassed to say what kind of cancer they had. There is a lot of shame about it. I want that to stop.”
