When Ryan Seacrest announced that the Top 7 on “American Idol” would each be performing a Prince song before revealing the Top 5, I squirmed in my chair a little. There are very few people in the world that I want to hear cover Prince.
Maybe it’s because we all had low expectations or maybe it’s because it wasn’t “Purple Rain,” but Gabby Barrett’s performance of “How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore” was pretty spectacular. So much so that the three judges couldn’t stop praising her.
Lionel Richie to Gabby: “That was what you call, my dear, ‘ownership’. Complete ownership and I love it.”
Katy Perry to Gabby: “I think you’re the most ready to go on tour… you know what, you’re the most comfortable and you just use it and it’s yours for the taking… you found something totally different I’ve never heard in your voice and it’s amazing.”
Luke Bryan to Gabby: “That was a mic drop moment and congratulations on being a big star.”
