It’s been awhile since I watched a reality TV singing competition and picked a favorite from the beginning. Maybe it was her unapologetic devotion to singing a Carrie Underwood song or maybe it’s that she seems to genuinely be a better singer each week, but Gabby Barrett is my “American Idol” favorite (right now).
For her Top 14 performance, Barrett was given Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb,” which is technically a pop song, but is it? Barrett wore her best Miranda Lambert outfit, but didn’t sound like Cyrus or Lambert– she sounded like Gabby Barrett.
Even though production went a little overboard with the set on this one, Barrett overcame the weird is this a church service vibe to leave the judges with nothing but praise.
Judge Luke Bryan lost his voice before telling Barrett, “That was my favorite vocal situation of the night… and for the first, I feel like you’re not playing around anymore. You’re out to get the whole thing done.”
Katy Perry piled it on with, “you went through the star wash, you come out the other side and look like a gosh darn star and you sound like a gosh darn star… I was really impressed.”
But, those comments were nothing compared to Lionel Richie saying, “There are things that happen in this business that are just magical. And I think what we’re watching right now is the beginning of that phrase, ‘a star is born.’ We’re watching the beginning of it, I’m telling you.”
