It was a night of emotion and tears Monday (Nov. 18) on Dancing with the Stars as one of the favorites to take home the mirror ball trophy, James Van Der Beek, was eliminated after sharing devastating news.
Prior to his second dance, James revealed to the world that he and his wife, Kimberly, had suffered a miscarriage of their six child. In a pre-taped package, James shared the tragic news.
“My wife Kimberly and I went through every expectant parents worst nightmare. We lost the baby,” James said through tears. “The little soul that we had expected to welcome into our family took a shortcut to whatever lies beyond. You never know why these things happen. That’s what I’ve been telling my kids. All you know is that it brings you closer together, it breaks you open, it opens up your heart, it deepens your appreciation, it makes you more human.
James went on to explain how he got the strength to dance during Monday night’s show. “I really didn’t think I’d be dancing tonight but Kimberly from our hospital bed said to me, ‘I am not done watching you dance.’ Kimberly, I love you,” he said to his wife.
“We are dancing to ‘Take Me to Church’ by Hozier, which is all about human connection that is so strong—that it’s out of control that it’s scary, that it rocks your soul and that song has taken on a whole new meaning for me this week,” James said. “When words fail, you sing, when there are no words, you dance and that’s what I’m going to do. Kimberly, I’m dancing for you, I’m dancing for us. So here we go babe.”
It was in October that James and his wife announced on the show that they were expecting their sixth child together.
“Thrilled beyond belief to announce that another little bundle of joy has picked us to be their family”, he wrote in an Instagram post.
James and his partner Emma danced one of James’ most powerful and intimate dances of the season. When the dance was over, James broke down in Emma’s arms from the emotion. There was not a dry eye in the house.
Judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli had words of condolence.
“When tragedy like this strikes it puts everything into perspective and this is just a dance show and for you to come out and dance with so much feeling and emotion, I admire you so much. Well done,” said Len.
“My darling you put so much heart into that dance it was almost impossible to watch, because we were with you all the way through but you did manage to give some wonderful special flow, great turns, beautiful lines, thank you. Job well done,” added Bruno.
“I don’t know how you go through that just now. I feel silly talking about your posture, but what I really do appreciate, in the midst of all that and human tragedy that you’re going through, you pulled up and you gave me great posture,” Carrie Ann said, allowing all to break into laughter. “You guys danced as one. There was a flow, there was an ease, there was a poetry in motion. Thank you from bringing your emotions to the dance floor this way.”
In the end, the dance and the judges scores of three 9’s wasn’t enough to keep James around. Finding himself in the bottom two with Ally Brook, James was out of luck. The judges decided to keep Ally, due to her past dances throughout the season. To the fans dismay, it was James’ time to go.
James and Kimberly are parents to five children, Emilia (3), Annabel (5), Olivia (9), Gwendolyn (1) and Joshua (7).
You can catch Dancing with the Stars Monday night on ABC.
