Actress Jessica Biel found herself smack dab in the middle of the ongoing discussion about vaccinations earlier this week, but found out how quickly things can get a tad out of control when social media is involved.

The controversy started on Tuesday (June 11), when Robert F. Kennedy Jr. shared an Instagram post revealing that he had met with Biel to speak up against a bill in California that would ‘limit medical exemptions from vaccinations without approval from a state public health officer.’

Social media got a hold of the pics, and began making assumptions about Biel’s stance on vaccinations, eventually forcing the actress to clarify her feelings on the delicate subject in a lengthy Instagram post.

“This week I went to Sacramento to talk to legislators in California about a proposed bill,” Biel wrote on Wednesday (June 12.). “I am not against vaccinations. I support children getting vaccinations and I also support families having the right to make educated medical decisions for their children alongside their physicians.”

She continued, “My concern with #SB276 is solely regarding medical exemptions. My dearest friends have a child with a medical condition that warrants an exemption from vaccinations, and should this bill pass, it would greatly affect their family’s ability to care for their child in this state. That’s why I spoke to legislators and argued against this bill. Not because I don’t believe in vaccinations, but because I believe in giving doctors and the families they treat the ability to decide what’s best for their patients and the ability to provide that treatment.”

Unfortunately, the damage might have already been done.

“Sorry, Jessica Biel may have the right to freedom of speech, but freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from consequences due to exercising that right,” a noted doctor wrote on his Twitter page on Thursday (June 13.) “If she’s going to advocate antivax views that endanger our children, she should expect pushback, especially as a celebrity.”
