For fans of the Batman franchise movies, Warner Brother has released the teaser trailer for the highly- anticipated film, Joker. The new movie stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker and his performance is Oscar worthy.

Joaquin transforms his face and body into the villainous character, giving previous Jokers, Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson, a run for their money. Joker tells the life story of the character and how he becomes the troubled villain. And from the looks of the trailer, it’s a dark and gloomy story.

Director Todd Phillips showed the film earlier this week at CinemaCon explaining the background of the Joker.

“I don’t have a lot to say about the film, as it’s still taking shape, but also because I want it to be a surprise. That said, there’s been a lot of chatter about what this film is and what it isn’t, and most of it hasn’t been accurate,” said Todd, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “When the marketing department at Warners asked me the other day to describe the movie, I said ‘I can’t.’ They said at least tell us the genre, and I thought about it for a minute and said, ‘It’s a tragedy.'”

In the trailer we see Arthur talking to what looks to be a therapist. In a voiceover, Arthur says, “My mother always tells me to smile and put on a happy face. She told me I had a purpose to bring laughter and joy to the world.

As arthur pursues the career of being a clown we see dark things happen, where he gets attacked and beat up. “Is it just me or is it getting crazier out there,” his voiceover says. “I used to think that my life was a tragedy but now I realize it’s a comedy.” And that’s when the Joker is revealed.

Joker hits theaters Oct. 4.
