When Adam Levine announced that he would be leaving The Voice, fans of the singing competition show seemed a tad shocked. But perhaps his The Voice comrades saw this coming for a long time.

“We’re going to miss him,” the most recent winning coach on “The Voice” John Legend says in a recent interview with Extra while on the red carpet of the Sesame Street Workshop Gala in New York City. “He has been part of the show since the very beginning. This was my first year, and he has been a friend of mine for a long time. I have known him since before The Voice. We are going to miss him on the show. I think he was ready and thought it was the right time. Gwen is going be great.”

Indeed, former The Voice coach Gwen Stefani will take the place of Levine when the show returns for Season 17 in the fall. Stefani is also the current girlfriend of The Voice coach and country music superstar Blake Shelton.

“It’s bittersweet for everyone, but Adam is so excited that Gwen is going to take his chair,” a source close to Levine recently told People magazine. “[Leaving the show] is something he’s been talking to [host] Carson [Daly] and the other coaches about for some time. It’s just time for him to leave.”
