John Legend has long let his music do the talking. And come Friday (Feb. 15,) the music superstar will let his faith shine through his new song “Preach.”
“I grew up in the church and one of the things we talked about was loving our neighbors as we love ourselves,” Legend says in a recent Instagram video promoting the new song. “My preacher told me that our neighbor wasn’t just the person that lives next door to you but other people whom you might not even know.”
In another promo video for the song, he sings some powerful words from the song about living one’s faith in everything that you do.
I can’t just sit and hope / I can’t just sit and pray that / I c an find a love when all I see is pain / Fall into my knees / and though I do believe / I can’t just preach baby preach, John sings in the clip.
Indeed, faith has long served as a cornerstone for Legend’s life. Fans will recall that Legend won an Emmy for his role as Jesus in NBC’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
“I grew up with not only my parents being very religious, but also my grandfather was our pastor,” he explained in an interview with Relevant magazine. “My grandmother was our church organist. My uncle took over for my grandfather when he passed away. I have uncles on my dad’s side who are also ministers and pastors, and one of my uncles is a bishop in Cincinnati.”
