“Who’s the Boss?” Star Katherine Helmond Dead at 89

Katherine Helmond dead at age 89

Katherine Helmond, best known for her role as Mona Robinson on the ABC sitcom Who’s the Boss?, died at the age of 89. According to The Wrap, Helmond passed away on Feb. 23 of Alzheimer’s complications in her home in Los Angeles.

The Tony winning actress starred as the ditzy matriarch Jessica Tate on the prime time sitcom Soap from 1977-1981 as well as the role of Angela’s (Judith Light) feisty mother Mona Robinson on Who’s the Boss? from 1984–1992. You may even remember the character actress in the role of Doris Sherman on Coach and Lois Whelan, the mother of Debra Barone (Patricia Heaton) on Everybody Loves Raymond. Helmond also lent her voice to the character of Lizzie in Cars, Cars 2 and Cars 3.

The 89-year-old was nominated in 1973 for a  Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress in The Great God Brown. She went on to earn four consecutive Best Actress Emmy nominations for her role on Soap and was nominated as Best Supporting Actress for her role on Who’s the Boss?

Helmond was born in 1929 and raised an only child in Galveston, Texas. She was divorced once and re-married David Christian in 1962, with whom lived out the remainder of her years with. The couple had no children.

As news broke, Patricia Heaton (Debra Barone on Everyone Loves Raymond) took to Twitter to share her feelings about the actress.

“Katherine Helmond was such a class act and incredibly down to earth. She was terrific as my mother on and I looked up to her as a role model. ,” she wrote.

Alyssa Milano, who played Samantha Micelli on Who’s the Boss?, wrote a sweet message to the actress she grew up working beside.

“Katherine Helmond has passed away. My beautiful, kind, funny, gracious, compassionate, rock. You were an instrumental part of my life. You taught me to hold my head above the marsh! You taught me to do anything for a laugh! What an example you were! Rest In Peace, Katherine,” she wrote.
